About this event
The paths of Nova Scotian funeral director-turned-songwriter Terra Spencer and lively Newfoundland duo Youngtree and Carole Bee converged at a music festival in summer 2022, when they discovered a shared love of songs exploring the darker side of life and the lighter side of death. Their combined forces promise an evening that runs the gamut from tender storytelling to lively instrumentals to quick-witted confessionals, first presented last year with a week-long tour in Nova Scotia, now coming for a summer run around Newfoundland.
Bad ideas, VCRs, crumbling factories, terrible therapists, hairy dogs, wrinkled shirts, French fries, questionable tattoos...all are fair game for Nova Scotian funeral director-turned-songwriter Terra Spencer. And the songs are good ones, judging from the stack of awards her three albums have received, and from the caliber of her collaborators, which include Ben Caplan, Matt Andersen, and David Francey, who chose Terra to help create his Juno-winning 2023 album, The Breath Between. Although her butterscotch voice, deft fingerstyle guitar, and gospel-charged piano make her a formidable musician, it's her onstage ease and crackling wit that make each show feel like a knee-to-knee conversation in a room of 5 or 500. “The real deal.” - Ron Sexsmith
Peter Youngtree and Carole Bestvater have been playing music together since 2015, developing a close musical and creative partnership through their multiple award-winning band Youngtree & The Blooms. Their one rule – “only play music we love” – means an eclectic mix of Scandinavian, Irish, Newfoundland, and American folk music, original instrumental and lyrical compositions, and occasional forays into Surf Rock and Western Swing. Youngtree has won MusicNL awards for every album he has produced, and was named the SOCAN Ron Hynes Songwriter of the Year in 2020. His most recent release was called “one of the best albums made in Newfoundland in 2022” by Tony Ploughman of Fred’s Records and was nominated at the East Coast Music Awards and Canadian Folk Music Awards, establishing him as “one of the most engaging new voices within the Roots music scene” (Roots Music Canada). Bestvater has performed with orchestras internationally and plays in various folk music ensembles, such as Crooked Stovepipe, Ladylike, and the Craig Young Band, and she has lent her talents to recordings for prominent local and international artists. She was recently inducted into the Canadian Folk Music Awards Order of Folk.
Together, Youngtree and Carole Bee have become a sought after act for their expressive, exuberant energy and their clear love of music and performance, bringing joy and good-natured fun to their audiences. Paired with Terra Spencer, the three present a joyful showcase of music that you won’t want to miss.
