Civic Engagement for New Islanders: Federal, Provincial & Municipal Canadian Governments
Thu, October 16, 2025, 5:00 PM (AST)
About this event
Join the PEI Coalition for Women's Leadership and Immigrant & Refugee Services Association for a friendly, informative and free workshop series for adult newcomers who do not (yet) have Canadian citizenship.
Learn how municipal, provincial and federal governments work, what elected officials do, and ways to get involved with local organizations and in community leadership. Enjoy a meal during every workshop. Travel and care reimbursements are available. We will provide a quiet colouring activity for children ages 5-12 during the event.
There are three opportunities to register. You may attend all three workshops, or register for individual workshops:
Thursday, October 16th: Federal, Provincial & Municipal Canadian Governments (5:00pm-8:00pm)
Saturday, November 15th: Civic Engagement Beyond Voting (12:00pm-3:00pm)
Thursday, December 4th: Civic Engagement Mix & Mingle (5:00pm-8:00pm)
Funding for this project is provided by the GEDI Grant Program, through the PEI Government.
Agenda
Frequently asked questions
Who is the intended audience for these workshops?
Recent adult newcomers to Canada of any gender, who do not have Canadian citizenship. This includes immigrants with or without permanent residence, international students on a study permit, workers on a work visa etc. Anyone whose status prevents them from voting in Canada.
What information will be presented?
Each workshop has a theme and a different agenda. The theme for the second workshop is a deeper dive into the roles and responsibilities of elected/appointed officials in the Canadian political systems.
What was the process for deciding the content of the workshops?
Coalition staff drafted workshop content and shared it with our Newcomer Advisory Committee, which includes five selected newcomers. Advisors provide feedback and recommendations to ensure content fits the audience. Since Coalition staff hold Canadian citizenship, guidance from those with living experience is vital. Advisors will receive a stipend at the project’s end.
What is a mileage reimbursement and who is eligible to receive one?
Attendees who drive, take a cab (or other paid transportation service) to attend the workshop are eligible to receive reimbursement for their travel costs. Mileage claims are $0.60/km to and from the event. We offer this to reduce the financial barriers to attend.
What is a care reimbursement and who is eligible to receive one?
Attendees who are responsible for the care duties of children/elders/disabled people are eligible to receive up to $50 each workshop. We offer this to reduce financial barriers for carers who hire someone to look after their dependant during the time they attend the workshop.
What are the child activities and supervision for the colouring corner?
The Coalition will bring markers, pencil crayons and copies of our Island Trailblazers colouring books, available in English and French (Pionnières De L'Île). These free, educational books are a fun way to learn about Island Women's History while exploring the contributions of local trailblazing women. Supervision is limited to a small corner in the back.
