An Evening for Violin and Strings--Brooklyn Wood and Members of PEISO-$35
Sun, July 26, 2026, 2:00 PM (AST)

About this event
What’s the difference between a violin and a fiddle? A violin is played in a concert hall… a fiddle is played at a kitchen party. This evening, you'll hear a little of both.
This program brings together works for violin and strings that reflect both the formal traditions of classical music and the living musical languages that continue to shape contemporary sound.
The evening opens with Two Pop Songs on Antique Poems by Dinuk Wijeratne, a work that places historical texts within a distinctly contemporary musical setting, rich in rhythmic energy and colour.
A selection of classical repertoire follows, performed by musicians of the Prince Edward Island Symphony Orchestra, highlighting the expressive range and nuance of the string ensemble.
Violinist and composer Brooklyn Wood is featured throughout the program. A recent First Prize winner at the Concert Artists International Competition, with a performance at Carnegie Hall, Wood brings a thoughtful and versatile approach to the violin. Her composition Celadon Waves appears alongside works that move between established classical tradition and music rooted in vernacular practice.
Performed in a chamber setting by musicians of the Prince Edward Island Symphony Orchestra, this program traces a quiet continuum between past and present, form and freedom—where the violin, on occasion, remembers that it was once a fiddle.

What makes your venue special?
Come hear the magic for yourself. Historic St. Mary’s Church was designed by renowned architect William Critchlow Harris—who was also a musician. The result? Truly exceptional acoustics that musicians and audiences rave about. Once you experience how incredible it sounds in this space, you’ll want to come back again and again.
How are donations used?
Under the Spire absorbs credit card and service fees for this ticket. A donation of $8 would offset these charges and allow us to put those funds towards venue restoration. Under the Spire also accepts donations at the door, on Canada Helps, and on our website. Tax receipts are provided for donations of $20 or more. Donations help us preserve this historic landmark. Thank you!
