Cine-Concert : Underground (Asquith, 1928) Live Score by Max Keenlyside

About this event
On May 3rd, we’re heading to Summerside for the very first time—more precisely to the Eptek Art & Culture Centre. While we won’t be taking the Underground to get there, that won’t stop us from presenting a silent film set partly in the London Underground!
Pianist Max Keenlyside will perform a live improvised score for Underground, directed by Anthony Asquith and starring Brian Aherne, Elissa Landi, and Cyril McLaglen.
Asquith is perhaps best remembered today for his lavish adaptations of classic British works for the screen, such as The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw, and The Browning Version by Terence Rattigan, one of the few films honored at both the Cannes Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival.
But before these landmarks of British cinema, Asquith began his career in the silent era, directing two of the most remarkable films made in the UK during that period. This time, we’re presenting Underground—and you may well see more of his silent work in our upcoming programming.
This screening is presented in collaboration with Island Jazz as part of our Cine-Concert series.
