About this event
In July, in the Cine‑Concert Series presented by Island Jazz & Roving Picture Shows, Iván Garnica and Mark Carr‑Rollitt will perform a live improvised score for a double feature: The Balloonatic (1923), a short Buster Keaton comedy about an absent‑minded young man and his misadventures at a fair, and The Johnstown Flood (1926), a silent catastrophe film about the Great Flood of 1889.
Film historian Robert A. Harris wrote of this 100‑year‑old film: “The importance of The Johnstown Flood to film history is difficult to overstate. The special effects of the film combine miniatures and sets to depict the actual historic event of flood and its aftermath, pioneering complex techniques. It was the Star Wars of its day.”
