About this event
In support of the Global Irish Famine Way, the Famine to Freedom events present an immersive musical and storytelling journey through Ireland's history. Hosted at the Benevolent Irish Society (BIS), this two-part performance explores the Irish nation's struggle for survival, the impact of oppressive rule, and the mass emigration that reshaped both Ireland, North America and other nations of the world.
Chapter One (Hardship & Rebellion): Focuses on the Great Famine, potato blight, landlord evictions, and the deadly voyages aboard "Coffin Ships". It then details Ireland's fight for independence, touching on the 1916 Easter Rising, the War of Independence, Croke Park (Bloody Sunday 1920), and the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Featured songs that complement the story line include Fields of Athenry, Isle of Tears, and The Rising of the Moon.
Chapter Two (Culture & Resilience): Lifts spirits with lively, rowdy, and classic Irish tunes, wit, and poetry from literary giants like W.B. Yeats, Oscar Wilde, and James Joyce. Some of the featured songs include Whiskey in the Jar, Galway Girl, Fiddlers Green, The Jolly Tinker, and The Parting Glass.
